I discovered there are not many things too much better than taking my dog for a walk around the neighborhood on a nice evening and running into Covenant students and graduate friends.
You meet lots of interesting people while walking your dog. Dogs are useful for getting to know one's neighbors, and whose neighbors' dogs will climb the fence just to escape and hang out with yours.
